Overall reflection of area 6:

In area 6, most areas of competency are advanced, however, for the entry level competencies I feel as though I have truly mastered them. Much of the curriculum for the MPH program is geared towards developing proficiency in obtaining and disseminating health related information (6.1). I feel very confident I have met and can continue to meet all sub competencies in this area. I also have years of experience in training others (Facilitating yoga teacher training, Training new and existing medical cannabis consultants) and in so doing, meeting sub competencies in areas 6.2 and 6.3.

Artifact: Team Teaching

Artifact Description

This artifact is a PowerPoint presentation that was created for HLED 555 Current Issues and Trends as part of the MPH program at EMU. I worked on this assignment with one other student in the program. We gave a 60 minute presentation on epigenetics and environmental factors relating to the time between conception and 2 years old. We prepared recommended readings for our audience (other graduate students), a presentation on the topic, as well as an activity to engage our audience in the topic. The PowerPoint has 21 slides, complete with speaker notes and cues for the activities.

Health Education Competencies

To create this presentation, I became competent at identifying valid information resources (6.1.2) on this topic such as the National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health, and the National Center for Biotechnology Information. I evaluated these resources and determined them to be accurate, relevant, and timely (6.1.3). I then developed a PowerPoint presentation to convey the information I found to my audience (6.1.5). I prepared for the presentation by disseminating recommended reading to the audience beforehand, I understood the presentation setting (semi formal, classroom), was able to manage all technology and presentation props to effectively deliver the presentation, and responded to audience questions on the topic.

Summary

The team teaching assignment was extremely valuable in learning how to work well with another health educator. Together we researched our topic, determined valuable information that served the purpose of the presentation, and adapted it for an effective presentation. This project showed me that I do not always have to do everything myself, and that with another dedicated health educator, a small team can accomplish a lot.
